John 13:34
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another"
A Comment
On the night before He would taste death for everyone, Jesus was washing the feet of His disciples. His work would become a paradigm for His disciples’ work. Just as He had loved, they too were to love one another. As those who continue to follow Jesus, we are also called to love one another as we have been loved. As the context of Jesus’ commandment and service demonstrates, love is oriented to the good of others. As we reflect on this truth on Maundy Thursday evening, may our hearts be pierced afresh by Jesus’ example and exhortation to love.
A Prayer
O’ LORD, as we have been loved, grant us to love one another. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
