A Verse
Ephesians 2:8-10
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
A Comment
Paul brings his argument to a fine point in verses 8-10, giving a summary statement of the preceding material, just in case anyone has misunderstood him. Paul declares that on the basis of God’s grace, everyone who has faith in Christ is saved. And to make sure that no one misunderstands salvation, Paul explains that this salvation is a gift from God.
We do not work for it. Salvation is not a wage that we have earned. It is a gift that we receive, and we receive it by faith. And all of this is on the basis of God’s grace.
What does it mean to have faith in Christ? I like the way that the New City Catechism puts it, “Faith in Jesus Christ is acknowledging the truth of everything that God has revealed in his Word, trusting in him, and also receiving and resting on him alone for salvation as he is offered to us in the gospel.”
