Calling on the LORD in Truth

A Verse, A Comment, A Prayer, A Blessing (3/17/2023)

A Verse

Psalm 145:18

The LORD is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.

A Comment

For as long as I can remember, I have understood this verse to mean that to call upon the LORD, we must know certain truths about him. That is how I understood the word “truth” at the end of the verse. To be sure, knowing certain truths about the LORD is vitally important. We ought to desire to know the LORD in truth. Truth about God matters! Yet, I believe there is more to this verse than simply having the right view of God.

When David tells us to “call on the LORD in truth,” he not only wants us to know the LORD truly but also to speak truthfully to the LORD in our prayers. What this means is that it is important for us to be honest with God when we call on him. We should call on the LORD with sincerity. We should make our requests known to the LORD without hypocrisy. He already knows our hearts, so there is no point in concealing what we desire.

Obviously, we must realize that our desires might not always accord with God’s will for us. In such cases, we need to submit ourselves to his will. Yet, at the same time, this should not keep us from praying, from asking boldly for the LORD to fulfill our desires as they are in keeping with fearing Him.

This morning, as we pray, be honest with God. Tell him what is weighing you down. Tell him your burdens. Tell him your desires and aspirations. Admit your failures and thank him for your success. Call upon the LORD in truth.

A Prayer

Would you pray with me?

A Blessing

The God of peace be with you all. Amen
