A Verse

Matthew 11:28

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

A Comment

This morning, we conclude our consideration of Matthew 11:28 by looking at the final clause of the verse. In it, we hear God’s promise to give rest to all who come to Him. Jesus’ claim is grounded in His love and compassion for the weary and burdened sinner. He loves us and intends to relieve us and give us rest. All who sin are slaves to sin, but those who have come to Jesus have been set free from such slavery. We are no longer debtors to the flesh because of Jesus’ work on our behalf. He promises to give us rest from our toil of trying to earn our way into His family. His way of salvation is grace. He gives us rest not because we earned it, but because He did, and He delights to share it with us.

A Prayer

O LORD, deliver us from the toil of our flesh that seeks to make a name for itself. We cannot save ourselves. We cannot provide our rest. But You can and will for all who call upon You, coming to You by faith in Jesus Christ. Let us hear Your promise anew this morning. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Blessing

May your eyes see the King in His beauty
That you might view a land that stretches afar;
Like Abraham, who looked to a city,
Whose architect and builder is God.
