Know What You Have Control Over

A Verse, A Comment, A Prayer, A Blessing (1/4/2023)

A Verse

1 Corinthians 3:6

I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.

A Comment

In his letter to the church in Corinth, Paul was concerned with division in the church. There seemed to have been a “party spirit” at work within the church. The people appeared to have their “preferred” servants of the Lord. Yet, Paul would not allow such division to be entertained in Christ’s church. He reminded the people that while Paul had planted the gospel seed and Apollos was responsible for watering that seed, it was ultimately God that made it grow.

This is an important reminder for each of us this morning. We are all but servants. We have a task to fulfill as the Lord has appointed. Some of us will plant the gospel seed, and others will water it, but at the end of the day, God is the only one that can make our work bear fruit. We must know what we have control over and what we do not have control over. We can faithful to sow the seed of the gospel and even water that seed, but the growth depends on God, which should drive us to prayer.

A Prayer

Would you pray with me this morning?

A Blessing

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. (Romans 15:13)
