Loving Sin

A Verse, A Comment, A Prayer, A Blessing (6/21/2023)

A Verse

Proverbs 17:19

Whoever loves a quarrel loves sin;
whoever builds a high gate invites destruction.

A Comment

As I reflected on Proverbs 17 this morning, I was struck by the emphasis on peace and its contrast with quarreling or strife. The word for “quarrel” here in verse 19 is associated with strife or brawling. In other words, it refers to someone who loves to fight, whether verbally or physically. According to this proverb, those who love to quarrel love sin. This is a strong statement.

When we find ourselves at odds with others, we need to be reminded that God intends for his people to live at peace with others. This is supported by Proverbs 17:1, which says, “Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife,” and other portions of Scripture. Think of Romans 12:18, where we are told, “If it is possible, as much as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”

This pursuit of peace with others is a mark of the Spirit-led life. The Spirit works to produce humility in us. When we find ourselves loving strife through our pride, we need to remember the humility of Christ and have the “same mind” that was in Him (Philippians 2:1-11) and ask the Holy Spirit to humble us that we might not “love the sin” of quarreling.

A Prayer

Will you pray with me?

A Blessing

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.
