I don’t know about you, but I grew up singing a short praise chorus based on the words of Lamentations 3:22-23. Admittedly, the musical arrangement for that chorus was a little hokey, but let’s be honest; many of the arrangements from that era were a bit trite. With that said, the truths themselves were profound. Occasionally, I still find myself singing that little song as a reminder of God’s steadfast love, His never-ending mercies, and His great faithfulness.
The thing that I didn’t realize back then but now understand better is that Jeremiah penned these words under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit during a time of deep sorrow. Consider how Jeremiah begins Lamentations 3 in verses 1-3:
I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of his wrath; he has driven and brought me into darkness without any light; surely against me he turns his hand again and again the whole day long.
How does a man who “has seen affliction” sing of God’s new mercies every morning? The answer is that God’s mercies and faithfulness cannot be evaluated based on our perception of our circumstances. Our circumstances and experiences do not change God’s character. In other words, we may find ourselves in lamentable situations. And, in such situations, it is right and good to bring our lamentations, our deep groans with sorrow before the LORD. Yet, even from a place of lament and sorrow, if we would approach the LORD, we must remember His goodness, His faithfulness, His mercy. Otherwise, we would never come to Him at all during seasons of trial.
I’m not sure what you may be going through this morning, but I can assure you that God has not changed. He is still good, still faithful, still merciful, beckoning you to bring your troubles to Him. You can trust Him with your sorrows and hope in meeting His fresh mercies on this new morning, even when things are hard.
As you go through the day, remind yourself that “the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end, They are new every morning, Great is His faithfulness.”
