A Verse

1 Timothy 6:11

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness.

In this morning’s verse, we see that as we turn away from pride, arrogance, and the love of money (verses 1-10), we are called to turn toward righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. The temptation we often face is to believe that we must avoid and turn away from evil while failing to recognize the call to turn toward and pursue the good that God has placed before us.

This is a charge that God lays before all of us. While Paul is specifically addressing Timothy in verse 11 (hence, his comment about “man of God”), the pursuit of righteousness is issued for all disciples of Christ. Yet, we must recognize that this pursuit of righteousness depends upon the work of the Holy Spirit within us. In our own strength, we have no appetite for true righteousness. But when we are filled and led by the Holy Spirit, our affections are ordered toward the things of God. As the Holy Spirit works in us, we will grow in our conformity to the image of Christ, just as God ordained for His people.
