Spiritual Transformation

A Verse, A Comment, A Prayer, A Blessing (2/16/2023)

A Verse

2 Corinthians 3:18

And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

For the last few weeks, I have been studying the relationship between spiritual rhythms (or spiritual disciplines) and spiritual transformation. As I have thought about the relationship between our practices and spiritual transformation, I have constantly been reminded of this morning’s passage in 2 Corinthians 3:18.

Spiritual transformation is the result of contemplating or meditating on the Lord’s glory as it is seen in the face of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6). This means that when we are practicing spiritual disciplines like Bible reading, prayer, or fasting, our aim, our goal ought to be meditation and contemplation of God’s glory as he has revealed it in Christ.

Such an approach to spiritual rhythms requires us to engage in these practices with relational expectations, which declare, “I will encounter the living God today. I will read of, meditate on, and respond to his glory in Jesus today.” I believe this is an essential aspect of spiritual transformation through sacred rhythms. We practice these rhythms not as an end in themselves but as a means to behold the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
