A Verse
Ephesians 1:18-19a
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.
A Comment
In this phrase, Paul is highlighting the place of the saints in the inheritance of Christ. Not only have we received an inheritance in Christ, but we are also Christ’s inheritance. God has lavished His mercy and grace upon us and given us to Christ. F. F. Bruce put it this way
God’s estimate of the people of Christ, united to him by faith and partakers of his resurrection life, is inevitably consistent with his estimate of Christ. Paul prays here that his readers may appreciate the value which God places on them, his plan to accomplish his eternal purpose through them as the first fruits of the reconciled universe of the future, in order that their lives may be in keeping with this high calling and that they may accept in grateful humility the grace and glory thus lavished on them.
How stunning is it that God would give the church to Christ as an inheritance? How unbelievable is it that God would so love and value us in this way as Christ’s people?
A Prayer
O’ God, what an unspeakable privilege it is to be regarded as the inheritance of Christ! Grant us to remember what Christ has accomplished for us and our salvation. Let us not forget that we belong to Him. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
